Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry has proposed the federal government grants work visas to illegal immigrants in the US. The program would be an alternative to the amnesty supported by other candidates, which would provide a path to citizenship for immigrants that do not hold a valid US visa.

Perry, currently Texas Governor, said in an interview with CNN last week that expecting authorities to arrest and deport millions of illegal immigrants isn't realistic.

"I disagree with the concept that somehow or another we're going to pack up 10, to 12, to 15 million people and ship them back to the country of origin. That's not going to happen," Perry said. "So reality has to be part of our conversation. And then you need to have a strategy to deal with it. That is what I think we will have, but first you have to secure that border."

He didn't describe what the new work visa program might look like, only saying that the authorities need to determine a better way to identify illegal immigrants and make them part of mainstream society. Perry also said it can only happen if the federal government first secures America's southern border.

"You can put a program into place in which these individuals can be identified, and [given] work visas in which they can move back and forth between their countries but not to become United States citizens," Perry said.

Perry maintained that the American public is more likely to support a new visa arrangement than a pathway wherein illegal immigrants could obtain citizenship. However, the reality of the situation may be different. Once you grant a work visa to an illegal alien there may be a "path to citizenship" anyway. There are numerous ways in which you can gain permanent residence in the US and eventual citizenship.
