UK appoints new Immigration Services Commissioner

The UK Home Secretary on 21 July announced that Suzanne McCarthy will be the next Immigration Services Commissioner. She succeeds John Scampion, who completed his term of office in May 2005. Mrs McCarthy will take up her position on 5 September 2005.

The role of Immigration Services Commissioner was established by Part V of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999. The Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner (OISC) became fully operational in 2001 and is responsible for the regulation of immigration advisers throughout the United Kingdom. Mrs McCarthy is a qualified solicitor who has lectured in law and held a number of senior civil service posts. She was Chief Executive of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme from 2000-2004 and Chief Executive of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority from 1996 - 2000. Mrs McCarthy is currently a member of the Board of the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals NHS Trust, a Ministerial appointment, for which she is paid £5,673 per annum.

Mrs McCarthy's appointment to the post of Commissioner was made in accordance with the Office of the Commissioner of Public Appointments' Code of Practice. She will be taking unpaid leave from the Civil Service for the duration of this appointment.
