Afghan immigrants found in UK shipping container
An international manhunt is underway, after thirty-five Afghan immigrants were found inside a shipping container bound for the UK this week.

UK tax reforms could cost migrant workers thousands
The UK government is considering changes to the tax system, which could cost low-paid migrant workers thousands of pounds a year.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, is said to be planning to prevent temporary and seasonal workers from claiming their tax-free personal allowance.
Under the current tax system, workers are not required to pay tax on the first £10,000 they earn each year. This means that low paid foreign workers such as fruit-pickers pay no tax at all.
Canada welcomes first immigrant under new Start-up visa
Canadian immigration minister Chris Alexander has welcomed the first immigrant to come to Canada under the Start-Up visa for entrepreneurs.
The Start-Up visa was announced by Canada’s previous immigration minister Jason Kenney in January 2013 and requires applicants to pitch their business ideas to Canadian venture capitalists.
A maximum of 2,750 Start-up visas can be issued each year; at the moment it does not look as though this quota will be met.

Migrant workers in Qatar unpaid for over a year
A report by a UK newspaper makes the claim that many of the migrant workers who are building the infrastructure for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar live in squalid conditions and many are not being paid.
The investigation by The Guardian reveals that some migrant workers claim not to have been paid for over a year.
Figures show UK’s foreign workforce continues to grow
The latest figures from the UK’s Office for National Statistics have shown that the number of foreign-born workers in the UK labour force grew by 170,000 between April and June this year.
The number of foreign workers in the UK has quadrupled since 1997 when fewer than one million foreign workers worked in the country. In the last year, while the number of British born workers employed rose by 2%, the number of foreign-born workers rose by 7%, with the majority of these coming from within the EU.
These latest figures show that immigration is still on the increase, despite government pledges to try and limit the number of foreign workers coming to the UK.
Migrant workers take 95% of Australian jobs
A report written by an Australian academic states that there have been 400,000 jobs created in the Australian economy since 2011 and migrants who have arrived in the country since that year have taken 380,000 of them; 95% of the total.
The report says that net immigration into Australia runs at about 240,000 per year, as it has done for some years. This level was set during a boom in the Australian economy and now, according to Dr Birrell, is far too high.
