Following the Beyond the Border announcement made by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and US President Barack Obama earlier this month, flying to the US from Canada will soon become faster and more convenient. Canadian immigration officials announced last week that beginning in February, eight Canadian airports will allow Canadians to use Nexus cards as proof of identity to expedite security clearance checks for frequent travellers at US border crossings.

The Nexus program is available for pre-approved, low-risk travellers into Canada and the US at designated air, land and marine ports of entry. When travelling by air, Nexus expedites border clearance by enabling card holders to enter either country quickly and easily by using self-service kiosks. Passengers holding the Nexus cards will be able to move through expedited screening lines currently offered only on a handful of domestic and international flights.

"We're hoping more people will take advantage of this so we see more people moving across the border," said Calgary MP Michelle Rempel. "Any Canadian can apply for a Nexus card and successful applicants have access to the faster, designated security lines for flights to the United States."

The program will be available at Canada's eight largest airports in Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver using dedicated screening lines. Nexus cards have already been in limited use for domestic and select overseas flights.

It will also eliminate duplicate baggage screening over the next three years, so that passengers flying from Canadian airports with US pre-clearance facilities will no longer have their bags screened again at the connecting US airport.
