Demand for H-1B visas up by 40% in 2014, says US immigration
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has revealed that it received 172,000 applications for H-1B visas in the first five working days of April this year, 40% more than over the same period last year. It has since held ballots and started dealing with applications that were successful in the ballot.
Only 85,000 H-1B visas can be issued annually; 65,000 to those with bachelor’s degrees or those who can show degree equivalence’ and 20,000 to those with higher degrees such as masters degrees and doctorates.
UK opposition says government must 'get a grip on illegal immigration'
The UK’s opposition Labour Party has criticised the Coalition government for its failure to ‘get a grip on illegal immigration’. The shadow immigration minister, David Hanson accused the government of ‘a shocking record…that the government should be ashamed of’.
Mr Hanson was speaking after he received a breakdown of statistics on arrests of suspected illegal immigrants in the UK in 2013. 4,535 people were arrested over the course of the year. Only one third of those, 1,585 people were deported. There were 15 prosecutions.
Quebec immigration to reopen immigrant investor program
Quebec has announced that it will reopen its Immigrant Investor Program (IIP) later this year despite the decision of the Canadian federal government to close its investor program. Quebec’s immigration ministry the ICCQ has announced that the program will reopen on September 8th 2014.
1,750 visas will be available. Applications will be accepted until September 19th. Demand is expected to be high, particularly now that the federal IIP has closed so it seems likely that the cap will be reached before 19th September. If, for some reason, there are still visas available, the ICCQ will accept more applications later in the year.
Successful applicants will receive Canadian permanent residence visas. Spouses and dependent children can also apply for visas.
Immigration policy may cost UK Conservatives power
A respected political commentator has warned that the UK’s Conservative Party, headed by Prime Minister David Cameron, may lose power at the next election in 2015 because Conservative party policy on immigration is unpopular amongst British voters who had originally emigrated to the UK.
Mary Riddell, who has written for many of the UK’s national newspapers including The Guardian, The Daily Mirror and The Daily Telegraph says that the Conservatives’ immigration policies may well have unintended electoral consequences. British citizens who are immigrants are unlikely to vote for the Conservative Party.
Senator urges US Republicans to 'get beyond' illegal immigration
Rand Paul, a right-wing Republican and a potential challenger for the US presidency in 2016, has said that the Republican Party has to ‘get beyond’ its problem with illegal immigration or it will never gain significant support from the Hispanic community.
Mr Paul was speaking at the launch of MRC Latino, a right-wing media lobbying group that will press for ‘journalistic integrity’ in the Spanish-speaking media in the US. He said ‘The bottom line is the Hispanic community is not going to hear us until we get beyond this issue’.
Mr Paul’s intervention is interesting because he is identified with the right-wing ‘Tea Party’ faction. In general, they oppose tax-rises, cuts in military spending, gun control and immigration, particularly illegal immigration from Mexico.
