US launches ‘Green Card lottery’ applications
The US Diversity Immigrant Visa program was launched last week on 1st October.
Also known as the ‘Green Card Lottery’, the program's main purpose is to increase immigration to the US from countries with traditionally low immigration rates. 50,000 applicants are selected at random by computer.
If you are lucky enough to be selected under the lottery scheme it is relatively easy to gain immigration to the US. The current program closes on 3rd November.
UKIP calls for UK border changes
The UK Independence Party (UKIP) has called for separate immigration queues for UK citizens at airports and border control points, as announced by Steven Wolfe at the UKIP conference last month.
Under the current system there are two separate queues, one for EU and EEA citizens (including British citizens), and one for the rest of the world. However UKIP would change this so that EU and EEA citizens would have to join the ‘rest of the world’ queue, and UK citizens would have priority entry.
They have also called for tougher measures to deal with illegal immigration.
Last Chance for Canadian Federal Skilled Worker Program
The current application cycle for the Federal Skilled Worker Program in Canada will expire at the end of this year, giving candidates less than three months to apply.
The program is based on a points system, which assesses candidates’ earning potential upon entering Canada. Successful applicants will gain permanent residence.
The Federal Skilled Workers Program will be replaced in January by the Express Entry system.

Finding an Australian job could become easier with proposed changes
Proposed changes to the Subclass 457 Visa in Australia could mean that finding a job there will become easier.
A government-commissioned report has criticised the Temporary Skilled Worker visa program for being too restrictive for applicants and employers alike.
Some of the recommendations include scrapping labour market testing, more support for sponsors, and changes to English Language requirements.
If approved, these changes will make it easier for candidates to meet visa requirements, and make it easier for employers to hire foreign workers.
President Obama promises to fight for immigration reform
In a speech to a Hispanic audience last week President Obama promised he will keep fighting for immigration reform.
Obama is facing increasing pressure from Hispanic groups, who he angered last month by delaying immigration reforms until after the November midterm elections.
Speaking to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, he has renewed his pledge to take executive action before the end of the year.
