Jason Kenney, Canadian Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, has announced the appointment to the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) of a leading figure in the Indo-Canadian community in Vancouver.
Ms Rena Dhir, a Certified General Accountant with extensive commercial experience, was appointed for a term of 3 years in accordance with the IRB's merit-based selection process.
The appointment is in line with the Minister's recent commitment, given to the Canadian Council for Refugees, to fill vacancies on the board with qualified individuals as quickly as possible, this being one of the measures deemed necessary if the processing time of cases brought before the IRB is to be reduced.
Created in 1989, the IRB is an independent administrative tribunal that reports to Parliament through the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism. It has three divisions, namely the Immigration Division, the Immigration Appeal Division and the Refugee Protection Division.
The IRB determines refugee protection claims made in Canada, hears immigration appeals, and conducts admissibility hearings and detention reviews.
