UK immigration: EU citizens threatened with deportation

EU citizens who have applied for UK settled status are being threatened with deportation, according to a legal charity. Despite previous assurances that no action would be taken against EU nationals who could prove they had applied for UK settled status, the Home Office is detaining and threatening people with deportation.

 

The Home Office’s actions have been blasted by legal charity, Bail for Immigration Detainees (BID), who said that threatening EU citizens with deportation contravenes the Brexit withdrawal agreement.

Campaigners have warned that the Home Office is not fit to run the Windrush compensation scheme, after it emerged that less than a quarter of claimants have received a payout. According to a report published by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), the Home Office ‘appears to be failing the Windrush generation for a second time’.  

The ‘Windrush Compensation Scheme’ report published by the PAC claims that the scheme is ‘too complex and too slow’ when it comes to remunerating people.

UK immigration deal struck between France and Britain

Britain will pay more than £50 million to France as part of a deal struck to crack down on illegal immigrants crossing the Channel it has emerged. UK Home Secretary, Priti Patel, agreed the deal to stem the flow of people making the perilous journey across the Channel to reach UK shores. 8,452 migrants have already made the voyage in 2021, surpassing 2020’s total.

Five-year UK work visas for skilled refugees to be announced

UK Home Secretary, Priti Patel, is set to announce a new five-year work visa for ‘skilled’ refugees fleeing war. The visa will be made available to refugees who can demonstrate that they have the skills needed to fill vacancies in the UK where there is a shortage of workers. It’s understood that the new visa scheme will operate under a strict points-based system.
