In the midst of a Trump crackdown on US Visas, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has scrapped the term ‘a nation of immigrants’ from its mission statement.

This is another indication of a toughening of attitudes towards immigrants from a President whose mother was an immigrant and all of whose wives have been immigrants. 

Data records compiled by the European Commission database, Eurostat, show that more than 28,000 non-EU citizens were denied entry into Ireland between 2008 and 2016. According to the data, 2,000 people refused entry are from countries recognised by the Government as conflict zones or areas of humanitarian concern.

There is in effect a Tier 2 visa cap due to the restricted certificate of sponsorship shortage (CoS), which is preventing Addenbrooke’s hospital in Cambridge from recruiting the junior doctors it needs, senior healthcare staff say. They say that the existing Tier 2 visa quota restrict the Cambridge hospital which has a tier 2 sponsorship licence from hiring well trained medical staff, with good English, from overseas, despite having vacancies that can’t otherwise be filled.

Top attorney for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Seattle, Raphael A. Sanchez, was accused in February 2018 of stealing the identity of seven immigrants in an attempt to defraud several credit card companies. According to the charging document, Sanchez stole personal information to defraud financial institutions, including American Express.

Highly Skilled Migrants, a group representing doctors, engineers and IT professionals and others, many of whom are on tier 2 visas, descended on Downing Street earlier this year to protest what they describe as ‘discriminatory, inhumane and hostile Home Office policies.’ The group has raised more than £25,000 to challenge the Home Office in the courts over UK visa laws.

A restaurateur in Oregon has been charged with E-2 visa fraud and forced human labor by a federal court, following an investigation. Paul Jumroon, also known as Veraphon Phatanakitjumroom, has been charged with one count each of US visa fraud conspiracy, forced labor and submitting a false income tax return.
