Starting 16 February 2012, Brazilian and Argentinian citizens interested in traveling to Australia can apply for an Australian tourist visa online.

The e676 electronic tourist visa allows you to visit Australia for a holiday or to visit family and friends. The short-term visa can also be used for non-work purposes including study for less than three months.

A spokesman for Australia's Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) said the new online visa procedure enables you to obtain a tourist visa more quickly. Additionally, tourist visa applicants can track their visa application's status online.

"A notification is sent to the client at the time of decision, providing details of the visa, and airlines are able to confirm the visa entitlements through the Advance Passenger Processing system," said the DIAC spokesman.

The tourist visa does not require you to have a special Australian visa sticker in your passport to prove that you have received your tourist visa. But DIAC said, if visa-holders wish, they can print a copy of their visa approval notification email to bring with them while traveling to Australia.

Previously, citizens of Brazil or Argentina had to lodge their tourist visa applications with the Australian Embassy in Brasilia, Brazil and Buenos Aires, Argentina.
