Irish work visa system branded ‘burdensome and expensive’

The Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) described the country’s existing work permit and visa system for non-EU doctors as ‘overly onerous and significantly costly’ during its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in April. The IMO said the system needs ‘drastic changes’ if Ireland wants to attract top medical talent.

Responding to a system that places non-EU doctors on rotation, forcing them to reapply for a new work permit or an Irish work visa in some cases, every three months, the IMO unanimously passed a motion to lobby the Health and Justice Department.

According to a new survey, 80 percent of Irish people think that immigrants are integrated successfully in the country. The percentage represents the highest proportion of positive responses across all EU member states.

Data records compiled by the European Commission database, Eurostat, show that more than 28,000 non-EU citizens were denied entry into Ireland between 2008 and 2016. Ireland’s Supreme Court has notified the State of its intention to make a formal declaration in February 2018, ruling that a total Irish general employment permit and visa ban that stops asylum seekers working in the country is unconstitutional.
