Spain tops destination list for European Union migrants

Spain's transformation from an impoverished southern European backwater into one of Europe's most vibrant economies is supported by an opinion poll published 19 February showing it is the most popular destination for Europeans thinking of working outside their own nations.

EU races to address illegal African migration before spring

In 2006 there were over 30,000 illegal African migrants who attempted the journey to the Spanish Canary Islands. This was more than a six-fold increase over 2005.

Similarly, thousands more attempt to enter the European Union by taking vastly overloaded boats to Italian territorial islands such as Lampedusa and Sicily, even attempting to make it to continental Italy or France.

Greece also intercepted hundreds, if not thousands, last year.

Irish finance professionals believe in foreign work experience

According to a report released on 10 February, Irish workers see having experience from working abroad as increasingly important. From financial professionals, 61% of the respondents believe foreign work experience will become more important because of continuing globalization.

About two-thirds of respondents say they would explore global transfer options within their own company first before considering work abroad.

EU to set up job centers for Africans

Louis Michel, the European Union's development commissioner, is in the western African nation of Mali for talks with Malian President Amadou Toumani Toure on setting up job centers for African migrants. The first such center is planned for Mali, with other centers planned for Senegal and Mauritania.

The aim it to help migrants find jobs in the EU in such sectors as agriculture, building and cleaning.
