Synagogue attack, white supremacists and immigrant caravan

Written by Sanwar Ali

The US visa migrant caravan is still moving towards the US border.  Trying to gain political advantage from this US President Donald Trump has made a number of allegations about the Immigrant Caravan many of which are actually untrue:

"criminals and unknown Middle Easterners are mixed in"

"Every time you see a Caravan, or people illegally coming, or attempting to come, into our country illegally, think of and blame the Democrats for not giving us the votes to change our pathetic Immigration Laws!"

It has been suggested that this sort of rhetoric makes acts of violence more likely.   Donald Trump seems to realise that many of his statements are not actually true and has backtracked on a number of the remarks he has made.  Under Donald Trump there has been a huge increase in terrorism in the US by White Supremacis, Neo-Nazis and other far-right extremists.  This is the number one cause of terrorism in the US.

Robert Bowers alleged White Supremacist Synagogue attacker worried about “invaders”

Concerns about “the Immigrant Caravan” has been used as a reason to justify terrorism.   There was a terrorist incident on Saturday at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh where eleven jewish worshippers were murdered by what is believed to be a White Supremacist Robert Bowers.  He was upset about HIAS a jewish group that helps refugees.  In Robert Bowers’ Gab account the following remarks were made.

“I can’t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I’m going in.”

“…they (Jews) were committing genocide to his people,"

“Open your Eyes! It’s the filthy EVIL jews Bringing the Filthy EVIL Muslims into the Country!!”

Andrew Anglin owner of the neo-Nazi Daily Stormer website concerned about the bad publicity for white supremacists and neo-Nazis had the following to say on Saturday 27 October 2018. This was before full details were known about the attack on the Synagogue.

…Please Jesus Christ let it be Moslems…

Mexicans offering sanctuary to Immigrant Caravan

There seems to be little evidence to suggest that members of the “Immigrant Caravan” are part of some sort of criminal conspiracy.  They seem to mainly be people who are suffering economic hardship and persecution looking for a better life.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto on Friday launched “You are home,” which would provide shelter, medical attention and jobs if the Central American migrants would agree to stay in the southern Mexico states of Chiapas or Oaxaca.  Indeed in practice most migrants give up before they reach the US border.  This is what has happened in the past.

Democrats concerned about three recent racist attacks

Not only were eleven people murdered in Pittsburgh, but in the last week a dozen explosive devices were sent to Democratic political figures and two African-Americans were killed by a gunman in Kentucky.  It is alleged that the gunman in Kentucky also wanted to kill people in a Black Church.

Most of the 65 terrorist incidents in 2017 in the US were committed by white supremacists.  37 of the incidents were racist, anti-Muslim, homophobic, anti-Semitic, or for some other reason used by white supremacists to justify terrorism.

Recently, Democratic Lawmakers on the House Judiciary Committee have been putting pressure on Chairman Rep. Bob Goodlatte, Virginia Republican, to hold emergency hearing and had the following to say.

"In the past week, our nation has borne witness to three acts of terror…"

"This groundswell of violence includes both the largest attempted mass assassination of prominent political figures in American history and the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in American history. Each of these acts was carried out by an individual understood to espouse white supremacist views."
