UK should pay €8m for annual immigration checks

The president of the company that runs the port of Calais has said that Britain should pay the cost of immigration checks carried out at the French Channel port, according to a report published by the Telegraph.

 

In an interview with French press, Jean-Marc Puissesseau said: “When the bilateral ‘Le Touquet’ agreements between France and the UK were signed in 2004, fixing the UK border at Calais, we were ordered to carry out these checks and to employ staff.”

EU family permit policy under Home Office review

The Home Office is reportedly reviewing its EU family permit policy after campaigners claimed that hundreds of dependent EU nationals are still waiting for a permit to join relatives in Britain. In the summer of 2020, legal action was taken against the Home Office challenging a decision to deny some extended family members of UK citizens the right to live in Britain.

Britain will attempt to attract top global talent with a new Scale-Up Visa, UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak announced as part of his 2021 budget. The visa is expected to launch in the spring of 2022 and will give fast-growing businesses access to highly skilled workers from overseas.

 

Sanwar Ali: Cheaper COVID-19 test saves money on travel to UK

The UK immigration status of people suffering domestic abuse is being used as a means of control and coercion, a new report has found. Domestic Abuse Commissioner, Nicole Jacobs, said that the term “immigration abuse” should be recognised in national guidance. 

 

Race to beat UK immigration bill sparks Channel crossings

In a race to get migrants into the UK before Priti Patel’s new UK immigration bill receives royal assent, people smugglers are ramping up Channel crossings. According to the latest figures, more than 800 migrants have made the perilous 21-mile since Sunday 17 October.  

 

A report published by the BBC claims that immigration authorities in France have prevented a further 482 migrants from crossing the Channel over the past few days, with a reported 17 vessels intercepting them.
