UK visa adjusted right to work checks extended

The Home Office has announced that the reintroduction of in-person, UK immigration right to work checks will be pushed back to 21 June. Employers were initially notified that in-person UK visa right to work checks would resume on 17 May. The decision to delay the resumption of in-person checks has been widely welcomed by British businesses.

 

EU citizens without UK visas will no longer be detained

In a UK government U-turn, Border Force immigration officials have been ordered to stop detaining EU citizens without UK visas. In recent weeks, it has been widely reported that EU nationals without the correct UK visa have been held in ‘prison-like’ detention centres, sparking fury among European governments.

 

EU Settlement Scheme applications exceed five million

With the June deadline looming for citizens of the European Union (EU) to apply for UK settled status, new figures show that more than five million EU nationals have applied for the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS). The figure is thought to be around double the number of EU citizens believed to be living in Britain prior to the Brexit referendum. 

 

Glasgow UK immigration raid could spark legal action

A UK immigration charity has said that it is considering legal action against the Home Office for ‘casting aspersions’ on two Indian nationals detained as illegal immigrants in Glasgow, according to a report published by The Independent. Lakhvir Singh and Sumit Sehdev were released from Border Force detention after crowds swarmed a van in which they were held.

 

UK immigration van standoff Glasgow: Men freed

Two men detained by UK Immigration Enforcement after protesters swarmed a UK immigration van have been freed. Campaigners hailed their release as a ‘victory for Glaswegian solidarity’ and told the Home Office that they had ‘messed with the wrong city’. The men were released back into their community following a day of protest.

 

It’s understood that Police Scotland intervened to free the men following a tense, day-long standoff between hundreds of local residents and UK immigration officials.

A voluntary survey sent by the Home Office at the end of April 2021 to more than 34,000 sponsors of workers is seeking information about employer time and costs associated with securing a sponsor licence, which enables them to recruit foreign workers on a skilled worker visa.
