Through the UK Borders Bill published last week The United Kingdoms Home Office is aiming for stronger border security which is expected to help in the fight against illegal immigration and organized crime. It includes provisions for the use of strong information technology systems, "biometric immigration documents" and secure data-sharing at the heart of the plan.

More people are leaving Australia to pursue opportunities overseas, despite a surge in the number migrating down under.

Earlier this month we reported on an obscure Canadian immigration law called the Citizenship Act of 1977. A provision of that legislation can strip citizenship status from persons born outside Canada whose parents were also born outside of Canada, even if the parents and the children are Canadian citizens. The little-known detail is that such a second-generation Canadian must re-register as a citizen before their 28th birthday.

2007 will be another bumper year for IT job hunters in Wellington, New Zealand, with recruiters all predicting strong demand for IT skills.

The skill shortage will continue to hit employers, especially in roles such as business analysts, Java developers and test analysts, recruiters say. Project managers and .Net skills will also be in demand.

Ontario, Canada is set to launch a new initiative designed to attract immigrants with the skill sets needed in the local labor market.

The Provincial Nominee Program will allow up to 500 nominated newcomers a year to be fast-tracked to Ontario within three to six months, circumventing federal guidelines.

Normally it takes two to four years for an immigrant to be admitted.
