Children's charity Save the Children has warned that there are 200,000 Syrian children facing discomfort and maybe death because they have inadequate clothing and bedding to cope with the winter in the refugee camps they are living in, having been displaced by the civil war in Syria.

The latest figures from the UK government show that 30,000 people left the UK to live in India last year, according to the BBC. Most, but not all, of these, are the children of migrants from India who came to the UK seeking opportunities in the 1960s and 70s. A similar trend is emerging in the US as well.

A newly compiled index has ranked the world's 27 richest countries according to how their migration policies will affect the developing world. The Commitment to Development Index rated the countries on how their migration policies would assist the development of poorer countries. Austria came first in the migration category followed by Norway and Switzerland. Canada came fifth. New Zealand came eighth. The United States came 13th. The United Kingdom came 16th. Australia was 18th. The list was compiled by a team from the Center for Global Development (CGD), a Washington think tank.

There are fears that countries neighbouring Syria may close their borders following a sharp increase in the numbers of refugees crossing their borders from Syria. Over 214,000 Syrian refugees have registered as refugees in four neighbouring countries since the start of the conflict in March 2011. The numbers arriving in Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq every day have risen dramatically. Many more refugees are expected as the fighting continues. Turkish and Jordanian ministers have requested international help.
