New UK Frontier Work Permit scheme now open

Ahead of the launch of the UK’s new points-based immigration system on 1 January 2021 (in reality launched on 1 December 2020), the Home Office announced the opening of the new Frontier Worker Permit scheme. The new immigration route opened on 10 December and is reserved for EU, EEA and Swiss nationals as an alternative to the EU Settlement Scheme.  

From July 2021, all frontier workers must hold a work permit for UK entry. Eligibility for the scheme includes:

UK immigration responsible for 20-year jobs boom says study

A study carried out by the Resolution Foundation think tank has found that migrants fuelled a 20-year jobs boom in Britain’s biggest cities, before the Brexit vote. According to the Resolution Foundation’s research, migrant workers accounted for 67% of ‘net employment growth’ – additional jobs – in the South East of England.

 

Meanwhile, migrant workers have also been attributed with jobs growth in the West Midlands (74%) and Outer London (107%). However, in Wales, migrant workers accounted for just 27% of employment growth.

Take-up of BNO visa scheme underestimated by UK government

A new survey has revealed that the UK government has underestimated how many Hong Kong nationals will take-up its BNO visa offer. Research by Hongkongers in Britain (HKB) shows that as many as 600,000 people could take up the offer within the first three years of the scheme, while the Home Office estimated 500,000 would arrive in the UK.
