UK visa authorities race Brexit to deport asylum seekers

The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) department of the Home Office is racing to deport asylum seekers ahead of the completion of the Brexit transition period. From January 2021, the Home Office will be unable to return them to the EU. However, in the rush to remove asylum seekers, UKVI could inadvertently be failing to follow screening procedures.

 

Hundreds of vulnerable asylum seekers – many of which could potentially be victims of trafficking - face deportation in the coming weeks as UK Home Secretary, Priti Patel, steps up removals.

UK immigration protections for Fijian veterans urged

Campaigners have urged the UK government to protect the immigration rights of eight Fijian veterans who served in the British Army. In August, Workpermit.com reported that the veterans had pursued a judicial review against the Home Office and the Ministry of Defence (MoD). However, the veterans recently lost a court battle to remain in the UK.

 

UK visa extension for NHS doctor seriously ill with COVID

The UK Home Office has finally extended the visa of Egyptian cardiologist, Basem Enany, who fell seriously ill with coronavirus. Dr Enany, who works for the NHS, feared he would be removed from the UK after becoming too sick to work. However, after months of campaigning and press coverage, Mr Enany is celebrating his visa being extended.  

Dr Enany, a locum consultant cardiologist at York teaching hospital, had helped to treat many patients suffering from coronavirus.

Tier 2 Skilled Work visa could discriminate against disabled

Following the launch of the new Tier 2 Skilled Worker visa as part of the UK’s post-Brexit immigration system, the Home Office has admitted that its new visa rules may discriminate against people with disabilities, according to a report published by the Byline Times. The Tier 2 Skilled Worker visa program was opened for applications on 1 December.

 

UK immigration officer wins £16k after unfair dismissal case

Despite allegedly using racial slurs, a former UK immigration officer for the Border Force has been awarded more than £16,000 in compensation following an employment tribunal. Joel Gold was accused of gross misconduct, with witnesses claiming that he used ‘racially offensive language’, while employed as a Border Force UK immigration officer.

 

New UK points-based immigration system launched with skilled worker visa

The UK government announced the launch of its new look, post-Brexit Tier 2 visa program on 1 December. Applications are now being accepted for the new skilled worker visa, allowing the brightest and best from around the world to apply to work in the UK from 1 January, 2021.
