During the 2009-10 financial year, the Australian state of Victoria was the first choice for Chinese and Indian immigrants emigrating to Australia, according to statistics released by Australia's Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).

Overall, Victoria has seen a decline in the number of new overseas settlers; There was also a lower rate of immigration in the whole of Australia as a result of the global economic crisis of 2008.

"Last financial year, 36,725 people migrated to Victoria, a decrease from the previous year, which recorded 39,559," said a DIAC spokesperson.

The Australian government is expecting the economy to continue to grow. Unemployment rates are already falling and employers are putting pressure on the government to increase skilled immigration to help deal with expected labour shortages.

The Australian government announced a total of 113,850 skilled immigration visas for the 2010-11 financial year.

"This will increase the proportion of skilled migrants to 67.5 per cent of the migration program to further address Australia's needs as the economic climate improves while still ensuring places for family migration and reunion," the spokesperson said.

You can gain permanent residence via Australian skilled immigration routes. Many of these visas do not require a job offer from an Australian employer.
