Immigration news

An email sent earlier this year to staff at the University of York has sparked concerns that academics are being put in a position of makeshift UK border guards. The email urges personnel at the university to check the UK visa status of foreign visitors, raising fears about the increasingly strict enforcement of immigration rules in UK higher education institutions.

Non-EU academics on Tier 2 visas are thousands of pounds in debt because they’re forced to pay inflated UK visa fees and permanent residency costs to continue working in UK universities. Current UK immigration law allows employees from outside the EU to apply for a temporary work visa, valid for up to five years.

Increasing investment in independent films is providing foreign investors with a ticket to an E2 treaty investor visa and access to the United States, according to a Forbes report. Purchasing a US filmmaker’s screen play could lead to a coveted E2 US visa.

In an effort to change people’s perspective of mass immigration, the Vatican is promoting positive immigration stories to combat the negative rhetoric that dominates the media. With news of UK immigration authorities and US visa officials cracking down on mass immigration, the Vatican said “the Church needs to change the narrative on immigration.”

United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) released an updated rule recently, clarifying the criteria for certain intra-company transferee L1 visa petitions. Where there are proxy votes employers must now meet additional requirements to show that the US company and the foreign enterprise meets the L1 visa criteria.

Pro-immigrant supporters and mega donor billionaires, the Koch Brothers, launched a new advert campaign recently, describing America’s illegal immigrants as ‘patriots’ of the country.

It is interesting to see that a right wing group is in effect campaigning against Trump. Trump himself benefits in his businesses from people employed no H-1B visas, H-2B visas, etc. Some right wingers take a very different view from Trump (whatever that is!) and feel that more skilled workers and other migrants are a good thing.
