The UK's Prime Minister, David Cameron MP, has hinted that his government may introduce measures to limit the level of EU immigration into the UK. The National Union of Students has called for an end to the requirement for students to register with police before they begin their courses. It is the start of the academic year in the UK and the new intake of students who have come from outside the European Economic Area are required to register with the police before they are allowed to start their courses. A senior member of the Boarding Schools Association has sent a letter to Mark Harper the immigration minister to say that the government should remove international pupils at boarding schools in the UK from the net immigration figures. John Newton, the headmaster of Taunton School, an independent school in Somerset, wrote to Mr Harper saying that he should 'consider most seriously and urgently removing from the student immigration figures those international students coming to attend our member schools'.

The United Kingdom Border Agency (UKBA) has issued guidance for students from outside the European Economic Area who are students at London Metropolitan University (LMU). On 29th August 2012, the UKBA revoked LMU's highly Trusted Sponsor status which allowed it to sponsor students from outside the European Economic Area to obtain tier 4 student visas.

The United Kingdom Border Agency's National Allegations Database (NAD) went live on Sunday 30th September 2012. The UKBA says that it will help it to track down illegal immigrants. The NAD will contain details of all immigration cases. Each case, for the first time, will be given a unique case number. Until now, files were held locally and were often not computerised.
