L-1 visa ‘blanket’ petitions face further scrutiny after new form is introduced

Employers applying for L-1 visas to fill managerial and specialist knowledge job vacancies under ‘blanket’ approval are now required to complete a new, longer form that further probes the employment history of potential workers. The new form was introduced on August 29, 2016.

New York bombings raise further concerns over US immigrant screening

Concerns over US immigrant screening continues to grow following a spate of terror attacks that hit the US in the space of 12 hours in September 2016. Attacks in New York, New Jersey and Minnesota on September 17 – 18 have fuelled speculation that US immigration authorities are failing to identify threats to national security.

Registration for US green card lottery opened October 4, 2016

Applications for the 2018 Diversity Immigrant Visa Lottery (DV-2018) started to be accepted from October 4, 2016, as announced by the US Department of State.  This year people from Ecuador can apply under the green card lottery scheme. Applicants must submit their entries electronically between noon on October 4, 2016 and noon on November 7, 2016, Eastern Standard Time.   Only a few days left.

US employment-based greencards greater availability from October 1 2016

US employment-based green cards are becoming more readily available for many immigrants coming to the United States on EB employment based immigrant category visas, from October 1, 2016. As announced in the October edition of the Visa Bulletin, the US Department of State will be processing applications under the EB-1 immigrant visa category for all countries of birth as of October 1.

India receives highest number of H-1B and L-1 visas despite USCIS Visa fee increases

During the August 2016 visit to India, Michele Bond, the US Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs revealed that despite a hike in USCIS H-1B and L-1 visa fees on December 19, 2015, Indian nationals remain the highest beneficiary of these non-immigrant visa categories. According to Bond, India accounts for 70% of H-1B visas and 30% of L-1 visas issued worldwide by Washington.

USCIS issues high number of ‘requests for evidence’ for L-1A and L-1B visas

According to a report submitted to US Congress by Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman, Maria Odom, US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is issuing a high number of requests for evidence (RFEs), especially for L-1A and L-1B visas. The CIS report states that ‘USCIS continues to frustrate employers with a series of processing delays.’

US Immigration Reform and Facebook vs Donald Trump

According to a report published by US immigration reform group, FWD.us, which is backed by Facebook founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, voters in so-called critical ‘swing states’ hold adverse views towards Donald Trump’s US immigration plans, which involve deporting 11 million undocumented migrants.

Swing states are US states where the Republican and Democratic parties have similar levels of support among voters, which are viewed as important in determining the overall result of a Presidential election.
