The IT Professionals Association (IPTA) has demanded greater transparency of the Australian 457 visa scheme after claiming that they have evidence that the system is being widely abused. The organisation represents some 7,000 IT workers in systems administration and IT support roles. However, IPTA is not exactly an unbiased source of information.  It is trying to restrict competition by preventing overseas nationals from obtaining 457 work visas.

Australia’s immigration minister, Peter Dutton, has warned McDonald’s and other fast-food chains that the Federal Government is cracking down on the number of 457 skilled worker visas handed to their employees. Recent data shows that more than 500 skilled worker visas have been issued to fast-food joints over the last four years in higher level positions in these organisations.

Tech leaders among Australia’s business startup community have condemned plans to further restrict 457 visas, saying that it would have ‘severe ramifications for the country’s ability to keep up with the world.’ In the coming weeks, the fate of the 457 visa is to be decided.

A freedom of information (FOI) request has revealed that the New South Wales (NSW) government outsourced labour market testing to a contractor, which recruited foreign IT workers on 457 visas. The revelations have drawn criticism, with the NSW government accused of allowing jobs that could have been filled by Australians going to overseas workers.

The war of words between the Turnbull government’s Peter Dutton – Australia’s Immigration Minister and Labor leader, Bill Shorten intensified recently when Mr Dutton accused Mr Shorten of ‘blatant hypocrisy’ over 457 visas.

The Australian government made up of the Liberal-National coalition has announced that it will cut the amount of time foreign workers on 457 visas can remain in the country once their employment term comes to an end. This makes it more difficult for overseas workers on 457 visas to find another job in Australia.  The move comes with a view to making the job market more favourable towards Australian jobseekers.
